Passiflora incarnata, commonly known as passionflower, has traditionally been used as a gentle, calming herbal tea. Its flavonoid and alkaloid content appears to provide these benefits on the nervous system, in particular by activating GABA receptors, and allowing it to be helpful in cases of chronic pain, sleep disorders and generalized stress. Notably, passionflower contains vitexin, an apigenin flavone glycoside with antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and neuroprotective properties.

More recently, research has explored the role of passionflower in various delivery methods, including tinctures, teas and standardized capsules, for its ability to regulate mood during stressful events. 

Some studies have even compared passionflower preparations to benzodiazepine medications, a common class of anti-anxiety pharmaceuticals, finding similar effects with a decreased side effect profile. For example, one study found that giving passionflower before a dental procedure led to lower stress and less memory loss associated with the procedure when compared to those given midazolam. A separate study found similar effectiveness for stress management when compared to oxazepam, yet less dizziness and job performance impairment. Quite simply, passionflower is a gentle, yet effective, solution for calming the nervous system.
